Remember when I, and, okay, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) predicted that all of New England will have marriage equality by 2012? Well, I was pleased to read on Weldable Cookies this morning that bill has been filed in the Maine legislature to legalize same sex marriage.
(God forbid the Advocate website contain that news. No, a self-described crabby Maine blogger beat ‘em to it.)
Of course, those mighty crusaders of the so-called culture wars are already drafting an amendment to “enshrine the definition of marriage as one man and one woman into the state constitution.”
Bring it, Twits.
There is also a new bill pending in New Hampshire to alter the state’s civil union law to allow for same sex marriage.
Having worked in a state legislature many moons ago, I will be the first to confess that the mere filing of a bill is only the very beginning of the long, slow, and frequently unproductive process of making a new law. Still, though, it’s something.
Someday one lucky state will be the first to get her marriage equality through the legislature rather than through the courts. For now, though, I’ll take it however and wherever we can get it.

amen sista!
Exciting!! I always new I loved New England!
amen! we’d love to have a tough decision as to where to go when we head north in october to marry. although i guess we’ll need to finalize a decision in the next few months for planning purposes…
yay Maine!
Slowly but surely!
Hey! Thanks for the link and mention! We’re still all a-twitter here. My old boss at the newspaper where I used to work asked me today to write a guest column for next week’s paper about the proposed law. I am decidedly excited!
[Excellent. Very proud (of you and the great state). Let me know when it's printed so that I can post your article.]
Super cool of maine…..
Before you know it, New England will suceed from the nation as one glorious nation of equality. I mean, how does a place like that even co-exist with the south?
crap, I didn’t spell that word right…succeed, I think.
ugh.
Only good can come to those who wait, right? I hope so because we have been waiting a long time!
