Here’s our take on the three questions posed by the Lesbian Lifestyle for its bloggers to answer in September. (Ugh, September. If it’s going to be Fall now, I’d least like to have a new back-to-school dress.)
1. What’s your favorite lesbian film? Give the readers your review.
Sigh, we don’t have one. They mostly just disappoint us. We’ve heard raves about Itty Bitty Titty Committee, and now that it has been released on DVD, we’ll surely check it out.
So let’s talk briefly about one of my favorite movie as a lesbian. Think of it as the Olympic women’s beach volleyball of movies if you will — it’s not queer, but we like it mostly because we are.
It’s Blue Crush.
Ah, yes, back in the good old days of a much more athletic Kate Bosworth and a pre-drunken and disorderly Michelle Rodriguez. (By the way, I confess that I followed the Michelle Rodriguez/Kristanna Loken story like I do the Lindsay Lohan/Samantha Ronson story.)
It was just revealed to me that Mo has not seen this movie. Simply criminal, and to be remedied asap. I haven’t seen it in years myself, and I’m more than due for a screening. Mo also notes that she watched MTV’s Surf Girls religiously and that it was fabulous — it aired for one season in 2003 and I missed it entirely.
Blue Crush, as you’ve probably gathered, was a movie about surfers. More, specifically, it’s about girls who surf. Ergo, you have probably also gathered, correctly, that it was not deep, but that it was pretty both in setting and stars. But there’s more — the movie really isn’t mindless, and though it isn’t high art, it is certainly more than a “surfer movie.” There is a convincing and effective ”girl power” (ugh, we need a new expression for that) aspect to it, and there is something sensual rather than exploitative about the women and the waves. In sum, it’s satisfying in addition to being bikini-clad, and you should see it.
2. Share one of your favorite recipes with the readers.
Chez Ladieswhoeatwhilsttheywait’s Rice and Bean Tacos
Heat two cans of black beans (well-rinsed) with 1) some generous heaping tablespoons of salsa (fresh if you can come by it, please), or, alternatively a can of chopped tomatoes with jalapenos and 2) half a package of chipotle flavour taco seasoning (like you would normally add to ground beef). At the same time, make a package of Mexican rice (your choice on the brand, our preference is for as authentic as possible).
When the rice is just short of being cooked, heat taco-sized flour tortillas over medium-low to medium heat in a fry pan or grill pan coated with Pam. Sprinkle the shredded cheese of your choice on the tortillas. Put a lid on the fry pan so that the cheese melts while the bottom of the tortilla crisps. If you are spicily inclined, put jalapenos on top of the cheese.
Place rice, beans, additional fresh salsa, and the hot sauce(s) of your choice on top of the cheese.
Fold (it will crack a little because of the crispy side, but it should hold.
Enjoy.
3. Have you ever reinvented yourself at mid-life – changed careers, gone back to school, ended a long term relationship? If so, why, what did you do, what was the outcome, and would you have done anything differently?
This belongs to Mo. In the last year she has gone from being a professional classical musician and music student to a freshly-minted, full-time corporate warrior and part-time law student. She would tell you something about why, what the outcome was, and what she might have done differently if she had time to do anything other than be a full-time corporate warrior, part-time law student, and perfect spouse.

Hey get ITTY BITTY TITTY COMMITTEE watch it and lets talk cause it ROCKS

These tacos sound dee-lish and I am totally inviting myself over for dinner next time you make them.
And why is Michelle Rodriguez such an angry, angry girl? Always with a sneer on her face, in every role she has. That’s not acting Michelle, that’s bad attitude! Snap out of it!
Great lesbian movie: Bound. Two words. Gina Gershon. Brief synopsis from IMDB: Corky (Gershon), a lesbian ex con hired to work in an apartment as a plumber, meets neighbors Caesar, who launders money for the Mafia, and his girlfriend Violet. The two women have a love affair and decide to steal $2,000,000 that Caesar has in custody before he gives them back to Mafia boss Gino Marzone.
(Denise, Love, you’re adorable. But not gay. But adorable. The gays liked
Bound
too, and are thrilled you pointed it out. Thank you.)
